Hating our Appearance

Hello there, beautiful!

This week for class, I had to read an article titled "Why It's Harder Than Ever For Women Not To Obsess Over Their Appearances". I was hooked before I even started reading.

This Huffington Post article is from 2014- yet nothing has changed. If anything, the way we view women's bodies in the media has gotten worse.

Just the other day it was released that GiGi Hadid- one of the most beautiful individuals on this planet- had her beauty marks removed. Because fashion.

No, no, no.

Photoshop is nothing new, but the direct effects of it still hit hard. On the other end of the spectrum, at least some people are finding the humor in things...

Snickers just released this ad:

Is blatantly bad Photoshop what it takes for companies to realize they're being absolutely ridiculous or is this advertising campaign just as bad as the rest?

When are companies going to 'get it'? I encourage you to read the Huffington Post article here.

Media Minutes: Barbie's Makeover

Happy Monday y'all!

Today I wanted to talk about Barbie. We all grew up with one. Love her or hate her, but the childhood staple isn't going anywhere.

I don't know if you've heard or not, but Barbie is now going to be offered in a range of different sizes (tall, petite and curvy)- this also includes different hair styles and eye colors.

Swoon.

Alright, but why is a 20 year old talking about Barbies? I'll tell you why.

Children all around the world play with Barbies and the fact that there are more options than ever, that are all beautiful in their own way is remarkable. This teaches children that beauty is more than just blonde hair and blue eyes. Playing and learning, getting used to these ideas when we're younger, help shape our values for a lifetime.

I'm a lover for body positivity, and while we can all agree that this move is long overdue, it's definitely a step in the right direction.

One last thing, watch this to see what young girls think of the change. It makes me happy to see these young girls happy, and at the end of the day that's what matters.

What do you think of Mattel's new Barbies?

With love,

Media Minute: Old Navy's Upcharging Uproar

Happy Tuesday everyone!

If you've followed my blog for quite some time, you'll know that nothing riles me up quite like body image, more specifically how it is misconstrued in the media.

Body image wouldn't even be that big of a deal to me or frankly anyone if we never started putting people into different boxes or categories in the first place. How a body is viewed is up to the person who inhabits it.  Simple as that.

What sparked this post are a few things actually. The first being Kim Kardashian's whole 'Break the Internet' Paper Magazine spread. The magazine took a beautiful woman and snipped her waist, enhanced her booty  etc. and for what reason?  Surely a Kardashian lathered in oil is far from anyone's ideal- or at least I really hope it is. The cover has been plastered all over the web, parodied ten fold and even discussed in some of my classes; I really just want everyone to dismiss and leave the whole thing behind. (Sorry, couldn't resist)

On another body image note, during my nightly reading I saw that Old Navy is pricing plus sized clothing higher than its petite and regular counterparts and I'm not talking some pocket change of a difference.

I know pricing differs numerous places, but Old Navy's plus size line is tacking on an extra $15 just for a pair of jeans! That pricing strategy is truly unsettling and what a bad, bad move for Old Navy.

I look at the situation this way. Old Navy's demographic is, but not always, women in their late 20s to 40s.

This demographic is filled with powerful women who want to look put together. These ladies aren't about to sacrifice comfort and know how to get a great deal.

This demographic is filled with moms who cart their kids all about town and realize that buying clothes for the whole family in one place is a wonderful thing.

All that has just been thrown out the window.

You see, when you insult your main consumer losing business is inevitable. You better believe women are smarter than to buy Old Navy's "higher price point reflects the selection of unique fabrics and design elements" press release.

Yes- that's really the company's reasoning for the drastic price difference between sizes. Not the use of more material, but that the clothing requires a whole different design aesthetic? Are you kidding me? Old Navy's PR team should be ashamed.

In case you were wondering, larger men's sizes are exactly the same price across the board. Granted men and women's bodies are different, but I think some serious rethinking is past due at the Old Navy headquarters.

In the meantime, this is what we can all do:
- Participate in change.org's petition to stop upcharging plus sized clothing
- let your opinion be heard!  Join the movement on social media by using #oldnavyplus

Women are undoubtedly the market's biggest consumers so Old Navy is most likely going to have some decline across all their departments. What do you think of this situation? Let me know!
Best,

Meet Chris: The Man Guaranteed to Brighten Your Day

Happy Tuesday!

The other day my dad sent me a video that he received from one of his coworkers.  It's been out for a few months now so you may have already seen it. It's a short film that is currently on Oprah's YouTube channel and follows a remarkable individual, Chris.

People with some of the biggest struggles never falter in showing the world just how beautiful their lives are. Then again, we are the only ones that can truly set our limitations. Chris is no exception. Please take 5 minutes out of your day to watch this.

(If you're on mobile click here.)

Chris' laugh is contagious; his charisma is refreshing. A beautiful and inspiring story.  How could you be anything but happy after watching this?

Have a great day!
Best,
Sarah

Media Minute: Bulletproof Coffee

Hello everyone,
Happy Friday!

You'll see that this Friday's post is different than usual. While doing some inventory on my blog posts I realized Media Minutes, random findings and topics in the news, were  seriously lacking. As I do Weekly Links every Friday, I thought it could take  a hiatus so I could talk to you all about something I just started noticing as a big trend this week.

*

I once did a persuasive speech in class about why people should drink tea instead of coffee. Most tea has no calories and each type i.e green, herbal, oolong - has different benefits. However, I shouldn't have prematurely thrown the idea of coffee out the window.

Both drinks are healthy respectively and coffee, when done right,  (say bye to loads of cream and sugar) can give you great energy, protect you from diseases such as diabetes and increase weight loss.

This week I learned what Bullet Proof coffee is. Maybe I'm late to the party or maybe this trend is just picking up speed, but who would have ever thought to add not only coconut oil, but also butter to their cup of joe?

This crazy combination is allegedly working wonders for people. An interview with the founder of Bullet Proof coffee reveals that coconut oil keeps you feeling fuller longer and butter from grass fed cows improves gut health.

Coconut oil in general is extremely good for you. It promotes a healthy thyroid and is a metabolism booster.  It can be used for many non edible things as well such as:
- Make up remover
- Body moisturizer
- De frizz serum
-Sunburn care

As for the butter bulletproof coffee requires? That sounds just as bad as adding excessive cream and sugar, right? If you use the right butter it won't be. When I say right butter I'm talking about salt free and from grass fed cows. Though it has not been proven, many believe that type of butter has the highest form of nutrients.

To test drive this for yourself, you don't even have to run to the nearest store to by the Bullet proof coffee brand. More information on Bulletproof coffee and how to make it  yourself can be found here.

*
While I'm starting to develop a new found love for coffee, I'm still a tea lover at heart so I'm not quite sure if I'll be trying this coffee trend just yet. Nevertheless, I wanted to let all of the avid coffee lovers out there to know about this.

As this is a new trend, it's hard to determine if there's any substantial evidence to support Bulletproof coffee and its success or effects. What do you all think?  It this just another crazy food trend in the media or something more?

Have a lovely weekend!
Best,
Sarah

I Can See Clearly Now

Yesterday I saw a very interesting piece on 60 Minutes.  I just bought a pair of Ray Bans so this story couldn't have came at a more perfect, or maybe, a more worse time.

Luxottica, a name you and I have most likely never heard of is a Monopoly; and I'm not talking about the popular board game in which I've never played.

Luxottica Group manufactures and sells sunglasses.
So, what's the big deal?

They rule the whole sunglasses world. No exaggeration. Unless you're buying sunglasses from some tween/ teen store, virtually every pair of sunglasses you see are made by Luxottica.

Prada, Versace, Dolce and Gabbana, or Chanel, Ray Bans... the list continues. Not only does Luxottica make sunglasses, but they sell them. Ever heard of Sunglass Hut, Lens Crafters or Pearl Vision? Even glasses.com, Sears and Target optical are run by- you guessed it, Luxottica. You can physically not go anywhere without falling into Luxottica's marketing ploy.

One company is putting a price restriction on an entire market. Because Luxottica owns everything in its particular chain of work, they can price glasses at unimaginable prices with no backlash.

This whole situation spells monopoly.
But Sarah, aren't monopolies illegal?

It depends on what type of Monopoly a brand is considered. In this case, Luxottica has- yet- to break any anti trust laws so they are in the clear.

And here's the sucker punch: Those $200 pair of sunglasses that you, I, numerous people just bought realistically only takes $30 to make. Particular names sell and Luxottica knows it. They also know we're blind enough to buy them.

Something to think about on this Monday morning.
Best,
Sarah

Billboard Music Awards Recap

I love award shows and last night was the Billboard Music Awards. Everyone tends to be a self proclaimed critic when big performances or award shows roll around. Today I thought I would recap what caught my attention in case you missed the show last night.

Best Dressed

Kesha

Pete Wentz

Jennifer Lopez

Shakira and Gerard Pique

5 Seconds of Summer

Performances

The Billboard Music awards is always jammed pack with over the top performances. Below are a few of my favorites. Also, I've noticed that videos don't often work when on mobile, so I also have the hyperlink to each performance.

Iggy Azalea performed Fancy and then Problem with Ariana Grande. Both were absolutely fabulous.  THe only "problem" with the song? That it's so darn catchy! Problem is definitely going to be the Summer song of 2014. If the above video isn't loading click here.

Michael Jackson, or rather his hologram, performed  Slave to the Rhythm. The performance amazed many people and equally freaked some others out. I thought it was pretty cool to see just what technology can do. On mobile? Click here.

Miley Cyrus was actually quite subdued last night. She covered Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds with The Flaming Lips. Much to everyone's surprise she didn't twerk everywhere or stick her tongue out incessantly. While everyone says never cover a Beatles song, this was nicely done.  You can also see the video here.

Big Awards

The Billboard Awards is made up of mainly performances, but here are some of the big winners of the night.

- Lorde won Best New Artist and for Top Rock Song
- Justin Timberlake won 7 awards(!) including Top Artist, Top Billboard 200 Artist and Top Billboard 200 Album
- Imagine Dragons won 5 awards including Top Duo/Group and Top Rock Artist
- Katy Perry won Top Female Artist-Jennifer Lopez won the Icon Award
- Robin Thicke, T.I and Pharrell Williams won 4 awards each for Blurred Lines

Big 'oops'

# Kendallyouhadonejob.  Australian group Five Seconds of Summer made their US  television debut last night. Billboard made an intro video telling the audience how their performance mirrors the Beatles coming to America for the first time 50 years ago. However, when introducing the group, Kendall Jenner started by saying 'One' as in One Direction then continued to say how she's a horrible reader and ending with '...seconds of Summer'. See the mix up here. It's almost as painful as John Travolta's whole Adele Dazim mix up a few months back. I guess she had ex Harry Styles on the brain.

If you watched last night, what were your favorite parts of the show? Let me know! Have a great week everyone!

Best,
Sarah

Monday Just Got a Whole Lot Better

Good morning everyone!
Ok, yes it sucks that today is Monday.

However, the birds are chirping, the sun is shining and I woke up to this:

source: here

Wowza.
I missed the MTV movie awards, but  after seeing this gif set I think I'm all caught up...

Yep, definitely.

Did you watch the MTV movie awards? Did this make your Monday morning a little more tolerable? :)

Sarah

Media Minute: The Oscars

Good morning everyone!
Did you all catch the Oscars last night?

Since 'Let it go' has been in my head on a constant loop, it just didn't seem right to blog about anything else this morning.

If you didn't tune in to what is deemed the biggest night in Hollywood here's what you need to know:

1. Gravity took home literally every award
2. Ellen was the best host ever by taking selfies and ordering pizza
3. John Travolta totally messed up Idina Menzel's name (Watch his big mistake here)
4. The award show lasted way longer than it should have

It wouldn't be an Oscar's recap without talking about the fashion. To be honest, nothing really struck me as unique or even breath taking.  I actually disliked 99% of the outfits I saw, but there was only one that was truly downright awful.... Liza Minnelli.

A satin  pant suit and a Vulcan salute? Right on.

I wasn't a fan of the plethora of nude dresses and a lot of outfits had a little too much bling. However, Lupita Nyong'o showed that simple can be stunning and she was my favorite dress of the night.

Lupita's acceptance speech for best supporting actress was also so beautifully worded.

"...When I look down at this golden statue, may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid. Thank you."

I also want to show the world's greatest selfie. Ellen decided to take  a selfie and see if it could be the most retweeted picture ever on Twitter.  Ellen also crashed Twitter in the process. Impressive.

During the show there was a tribute to the Wizard of Oz. P!nk came out and sang  a flawless rendition somewhere over the rainbow and you can watch it here

Lupita's dress, Ellen's selfie and P!nk's performance were my favorite highlights from the Oscars. I'd love to hear yours!

Alright, I also shamelessly loved John Travolta's mess up and this post inspired from his mistake.

Have a great day everyone.
Best,
Sarah

The Issue With Body Issues

I know, I know I don't post on Saturdays so...
1. Hi, hello there friend, how are you? I hope you're enjoying your weekend.
2. I found something that I think is important to talk about and there is just no other time quite as fitting to talk about it than right now.

Alright, here we go.
Our media puts a lot of emphasis on “the perfect body” or how we need to look a certain way. Teens especially feed into this and as a result go to extreme measures to fit into to what society portrays as ideal.

Magazines, TV Shows, Tumblr... all these mediums tend to portray tall and slender girls who are super toned or scary skinny as attractive.   Teenagers eat this up.  Their mental and physical actions start to snowball. As a result, because these images are the only thing a majority of the population sees, women ( and men!) feel bad about themselves and actually turn to self harm.

Now by saying this, I'm not putting down the before mentioned body type or saying that the individual is not special, good looking or that there is something wrong with them for being that thin. Every body is different. Everybody and every body is beautiful! The time to appreciate ourselves exactly the way we are is long overdue.

Body image disorder, BID, is a real, serious issue that anyone can have. We've all learned that if you have nothing nice to say then don't say anything at all, yet when it comes to someone's size that rule gets thrown out the window. That just doesn't make sense to me.

Now that we are enveloped in the era of technology, harsh comments and bullying arise a lot more easily. Most of us hide behind our phones, computers, etc and think it's ok to call people out on their insecurities because it's not truly to their face. Well guess what everyone: it still hurts.

I spent quite a chunk of my time on the media and its hold on the body issues that occur in our society this past  semester and I plan on continuing to do so in the future. Consequently, when a new, major story comes out about body issues or BID I jump at the chance to read it. I found it appropriate to write this post  in light of Ke$ha's admittance to rehab. It was brought to the public's attention today that the pop songstress checked herself into rehab for an eating disorder. I applaud her for this, but how her eating disorder came to be? Not so much. A music producer, Dr. Luke, told Ke$ha that she "looks like a f*ing refrigerator".

After reading Luke's comment I was sick to my stomach.
No one deserves to read or hear such a statement or anything remotely relative to that about themselves - ever.

Our media, our schema on body beauty is absolutely sickening. Click here to read an article that talks more about Ke$ha's situation and many others like it. I strongly encourage you to check it out. I admire Cassey Ho for so many reasons, but her never ending passion about body image issues is  undoubtedly something to be praised.

Next time you're browsing online or at the store remember that the images you see are not realistic. Magazines care about making sales, not how their covers make you feel about yourself. Photo manipulation is so overused- yet  still so discreet that with a few moves of a mouse someone can look instantly prettier or slimmer. What you see is not real.

The #thighgap tags on Tumblr and Instagram represent just a small percentage of the world that is actually that slim and guess what. The girls flaunting those images? They probably have insecurities of their own and bragging about it is their odd way to cope. We thrive off of positivity : don't put down anyone because the body they were given is different than yours.

Life is hard enough as it is- love  and help others see just how beautiful they genuinely are. Embrace what you have. Love what you have. You, my dear, are one of a kind.

Best,
Sarah

Weekly Links: Recent Revelations

Hello everyone and TGIF!
Finals are over. Can I get a hallelujah.

source:here

Because of finals, I didn't spend that much time online...
Ok that's actually a lie. A huge lie.

I found a lot of pretty cool things (most of which relate to topics I *ironically* talked about in class this semester).

source:here

"The the things I'm learning in college are actually relevant and I feel like a well informed individual!" - my biggest epiphany as a college Freshman

While most of these are a total 180 to my links last week, I still think they are interesting! Maybe it's just the communications major in me?

Enjoy!

Up worthy put out a great video this week  from a new Pantene ad about the double standards of women. In just 60 seconds the video sends a beautiful and powerful message about gender stereotyping...

...But don't give up on hope on all humanity just yet! I am applauding Top Toy Group in Sweden this holiday season for having gender neutral toys and page layouts in their catalog. Hopefully this is a sign that the importance of being androgynous will finally become a "thing" and we won't have these gender issues in the future! Go Sweden!

(Jeff Koons is probably so proud of this; now its 10x more kitch!)

What is art? Is that for us or the artist to ultimately decide? I talked about this quite a few times this semester and I can tell you I still can't define art- maybe it can't be defined. Currenty at Eye Beam in New York, there's a new installment of emoji art (the first of its kind). This day in age, I should have saw this coming. Emoji's are a way for us to express anything with out saying a word just as art continually does. Click the picture above if you're interested in the exhibit and here to see some of the pieces.

This week there was an uprising about University of New Hampshire's new logo. The university felt that they needed a face lift and hired  the design company Chermayeff Geismar & Haviv to create a new logo for up to $100,000. For those (including myself) who think that price tag was extreme: it was. It's reported now that it was only supposedly $65,000. A whole bunch of media ethics are being questioned as to if the University did actually pay this much, different economical alternatives and why would they spend that much money for a LOGO. Come on people. A very interesting read.

All hail the queen.
 B has done it again.
Without any notice Beyoncé dropped a new album right before midnight last night. Not only that, but the album is all visual. Each song has a music video and won't drop in stores until December 21. This is such a bold move in the music world and Beyoncé is  getting all the hype she needs  with out any prior promotion. Beyoncé didn't spend a dime on advertising and proves that word of mouth is a powerful media tactic- we're doing the work for her!  This is such an unprecedented move in the media industry and just further proves that Beyoncé  is still fierce.
 ( Sasha fierce that is)

Last but not least, a video to brighten your day.
5 year old Claire Koch has 2 deaf parents. To make sure they got most of her school's holiday concert, Claire decided to sign every. single. song. Prepare to have your heart melt.

I wish you all a safe and wonderful winter break. While classes are taking a hiatus, I won't be! Please, check back in soon- fun things are coming this way.

Best,
Sarah
